Number 4 Make an Impressed Print?

Try playing with pencils and polystyrene to create a unique piece of art!
Step 01
Firstly, gather all the materials you're going to use. These include: thin sheets of polystyrene (fruit/veg/meat trays) or commercially made polyblock; pencils; water-based printing inks; ink rollers; a rolling surface (eg, acetate); and newsprint paper.
Step 02
Take a sheet of polystyrene and draw a design or a picture lightly on to its surface. Go over your drawing to make the lines and shapes deep.
Step 03
Step 03
Roll out your chosen colours of printing ink on a non-porous surface, e.g. acetate, to get a thin layer of ink onto your roller. Then, roll the ink over your design. The ink will not go into your marked out lines.
Step 04
Step 04
Place a piece of newsprint paper over your block to take a print. Rub it lightly. Carefully peel away the paper from the block. Well done, you've just created an impressed print! How does it look? Are you happy with your work?
Step 05
Step 05
Your polystyrene block can be wiped clean and used again and again. You could use it like a stamp printer to take a series of prints. Here's one example of an impressed print.
Tip For Teachers:
Try working on a series of small blocks that you could use over and over again to make greeting cards.
