| Choose a piece of strong art paper.
Cover the paper with a layer of thick, brightly
coloured wax crayon. Lean heavily on the crayons
and use lots of colours if you wish. Don't leave
any gaps! |
| Scrunch the paper tightly into
a ball. Don't worry, you won't destroy it! You just
want to crack the wax. |
| Flatten the paper and use a large
paintbrush to paint a wash of dark fairly watery
paint over it. The paint will rest in the cracks
to create a batik-type effect. |
| The wax crayon will resist the
paint but you will need to dab the page with a bit
of tissue to remove excess paint. |

Mount your finished design on a
piece of card or sugar paper.
Congratulations! You have made a paper batik design. |

| Why not draw a favourite picture
with heavy colouring and create a paper batik picture
in the same way? |
| Look at how it turned out. Isn't
it just beautiful? |

| Tip For Teachers: |
| When dry, the paper batik pictures
may be ironed between sheets of newspaper to flatten
them. A wash of PVA glue may be applied to create
a glossy finish. |
