Number 3 Create a Paper Batik Picture?
Batik can be so pretty and unusual. It's also easy to do … so have a go!
Step 01
Gather the items you will need.
Click on the toolbox above to see a list of tools & materials you will need.
Step 02
Step 02
Choose a piece of strong art paper. Cover the paper with a layer of thick, brightly coloured wax crayon. Lean heavily on the crayons and use lots of colours if you wish. Don't leave any gaps!
Step 03
Step 03
Scrunch the paper tightly into a ball. Don't worry, you won't destroy it! You just want to crack the wax.
Step 04
Step 04
Flatten the paper and use a large paintbrush to paint a wash of dark fairly watery paint over it. The paint will rest in the cracks to create a batik-type effect.
Step 05
Step 05
The wax crayon will resist the paint but you will need to dab the page with a bit of tissue to remove excess paint.
Step 06
Step 06
Mount your finished design on a piece of card or sugar paper.
Congratulations! You have made a paper batik design.
Step 07
Step 07
Why not draw a favourite picture with heavy colouring and create a paper batik picture in the same way?
Step 08
Step 08
Look at how it turned out. Isn't it just beautiful?
Tip For Teachers:
When dry, the paper batik pictures may be ironed between sheets of newspaper to flatten them. A wash of PVA glue may be applied to create a glossy finish.
